The “immune system” is an equal weight contributor to cognition, and it has it’s own variance in “intelligence” as astrocyte “intelligence”. [WIP]

Think of them as an additive and a subtractive set of systems.

Hah, “consciousness runs through our veins” quite literally.

Wonder how much active work is looking into rolling back immune cells to PSC equivalents?

It’s just so weird that human cognitive performance curve over a lifetime looks so similar to immune response strength.

It’s interesting to think of immune function as not just external information storage, but transfer mechanism. Considering how heavily it impacts fetal development, then shapes development in neonates (breast feeding is about that immune information transfer as well as nutrition, but that’s a lot less important in other species), then develops stronger, up until it collapses.

This idea of this group of sustained information transfers stretching back the length of that organisms history is a really interesting way to think about “life”

The Neuroimmune System and the Cerebellum – I mean. waves at everything

Functional immune cell–astrocyte interactions – The interdependent relationship here is really heavy from a lot of angles.

[Astrocytes and their function]

Shining the Light on Astrocytic Ensembles – Kind of a good point, the first team to develop a set of “functional correlates of astrocyte activation is probably going to be cited until we extinct ourselves by graduating from FAFO university.

Amplified Gliosis and Interferon-Associated Inflammation in the Aging Brain following Diffuse Traumatic Brain Injury – Astrocytes leave glial scars in response to insult, microglia on the other hand try to phagocytose it all out. This generalizes to “memory” as well, astrocytes “swell” and induce dendritic morphology changes in response to stimuli, and microglia prune excess data to make the stimuli specific enough to process quickly. Imagine some types of dementia as the result of an “overactive” immune response relative to the astrocyte network. Because they are interdependent networks, individual expression and advance speed is going to be a factor of both, rather than one or the other.

Speculation corner stuff –

What if we conceptualized cancers as hyper/hypo effects of astrocyte or immune systems? Maybe internal metabolic (astrocyte networks) vs. external metabolic (immune network)?

Neuro-HIV—New insights into pathogenesis and emerging therapeutic targets – Cholesterol metabolism almost always ties back to astrocyte states, much of the “negative” association of hypertension with dementia is actually an artifact of cholesterol metabolism rather than hypertension itself.

Intravenous immunoglobulin treatment improves multiple neuropsychiatric outcomes in patients with pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome – It’s actually weird how often this is popping up lately, this is the first pediatric one I’ve seen, but there’s been a significant number of this mistakenly “psychiatric” cases which persist for years and years which got cleared up by resolving an underlying immune issue.
